Meet Safyre Terry, who went through a life-changing tragic incident just over two years ago. Safyre who was only 8-years-old, lost her dad, sister and two brothers in the horrific ordeal of a suspected arson attack on their home. When firefighters made it to the house, they found Safyre, barely alive but still breathing, next to her dad who had shielded her from most of the damage.
Safyre was the only one in the house to survive but received life-threatenting burns on over 75% of her body. When her story came out, people around the world wanted to show their support and make her Christmas special.
Safyre’s aunt, Liz Dolder, has been looking after her ever since the ordeal and has also gone through a very hard time. While coping with her own losses and mourning, she has watched Safyre go into more than fifty operations at specialist hospitals to give her her life back, with more yet to come.
Just as any 8-year-old would, Safyre absolutely loves Christmas and thinks it’s the best and most fun time of year. That was true before but this would be the first Christmas that she had to spend without most of her family members.
Her aunt Liz wanted to keep her spirits up and was determined to give Safyre the Christmas the she deserved. She bought her a small tree with a few presents underneath but felt that she needed to do more. She went online on Facebook and made post asking for those who would be kind enough to write kind Christmas cards to Safyre and post them to her address.
It wasn’t long before responses came to her online and then all of a sudden, she was receiving cards, letters and gifts from every corner of the world who had been touched by her story.
She was receiving so many letters and parcels that her local postal office had to rent out an extra warehouse to hold and process it all! The workers were more than happy about this and worked overtime to make sure Safyre received every single one of them!
As her story become more popular and shared online, even celebrities were responding and sending her special memorabilia and greetings. In fact, as of the last count, Safyre’s local mail center estimated that the young girl had received over one million cards by Christmas Eve. She even caught the attention of the President of the United States, Mr. Obama himself, who sent her a signed greetings card and a touching letter!
Safyre was overjoyed that so many people reached out and wanted to support her through her tough times, but being the angel she is, she thought about other kids around the world who are also in her position and have to go through Christmas the way she would have felt. She donated a lot of her toys and gifts to the Salvation Army and a local hospital where she was treated for most of her time.
And it doesn’t end there, people also donated to pay for Safyre’s medical bills and also raised a college fund for her, totalling up to over $400,000 in kind donations.
