Dad Joel Cervantes Macias was taking taking a different route home one day when he noticed an elderly man pushing an ice cream cart very slowly. Joel knew that it must have been hard work and worse yet, hard times for the old man and any family he had if he resorted to pushing the cart all day to earn.
“It broke my heart seeing this man that should be enjoying retirement still working at this age,” Joel said. “I had to pull over and took this picture. I then bought 20 paletas and gave him $50 and said may God bless him and drove away.”
Joel, from Chicago, took a photo of 89-year-old Fidencio Sanchez and crated a GoFundMe page for him, to raise money so that he didn’t have to push carts tirelessly anymore. The local community really shined through, instead of an original asking $3,000, they were able to raise over $140,000. Macias also learned of the old man’s story, how he suddenly lost his wife of 60 years and was only supported now by his daughter, and doing what he could to help out, even if that meant earning around $50 a day.
